2011 BMW M5 with 550-hp

BMW’s M division is working closely together with the design team currently working on the next-generation 2010 BMW 5-Series for their fifth-generation M5. The next BMW 5-Series is expected to make its debut in mid-2009 as a 2010 model year, however the M5 will come as 2011 model year.

According to BMW sources who spoke with AutoCar, BMW will use the current V10, however the 5.0 liter will be upped to 5.5. Expect a power output of 550-hp to take on the new upcoming E 63 AMG.

Sources say that the 2011 BMW M5 will also get direct-injection and a turbocharged unit to reduce emissions. The M division will also incorporate EfficientDynamics programs such as the start-stop technology to improve fuel-economy.

The engine will be mated with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or BMW’s new 7-speed M DCT dual-clutch transmission.
